Bio

Tomi Oladipo is a journalist, news anchor and Africa analyst.

He is most often seen presenting on DW News, where he has been a familiar face and voice since 2019.

For 12 years, he was a distinct presence on the BBC's radio, television and online platforms from Africa.

He has reported on a wide range of events across the continent including the civil war in South Sudan, to Islamist militant activity in the Sahel, the influence of technology in business innovation, Sudan’s political transition, and China’s inroads to Djibouti. He has been involved in investigations on human trafficking cartels between Nigeria and Europe, police death squads in Kenya and soldier-led sexual violence in South Sudan.

On the Boko Haram crisis in Nigeria, Tomi has been one of the key voices, gaining rare and exclusive access to a spokesman for the militant group in 2014. He was also the first international journalist to report from territory liberated from the insurgents in 2015 in the northeast of the country. He provided key coverage of the kidnapping of the Chibok schoolgirls, gaining exclusive access to the girls who escaped and others who were released later.

Tomi also presented the television programmes Reporters, Africa Business Report, In Business Africa and Africa Eye on BBC World News.

The course of duty led to interviews with numerous world leaders and prominent personalities.

His work won him the Radio Award at the 2018 One World Media Awards, as well as nominations in the 2012 Future Awards and 2017 AIB Awards.

Tomi’s expertise on security issues has been sought by government bodies, national security and defence departments, international humanitarian organisations, and think tanks, in the form of bespoke analysis and advice.

As an experienced conference facilitator, he has chaired and taken part in numerous panel debates around the world.

He is a graduate in Communication from Daystar University and is fluent in Yoruba, can attempt an argument in French and Swahili, and is very slowly learning German.
